Dakuten

A dakuten (濁点) is a small diacritical mark written in the top-right corner of a Japanese kana character to turn a voiceless consonant into a voiced one.

It looks like two small strokes or a quotation mark and is also called tenten (てんてん).

The same dakuten marks also apply to Katakana characters.

Example: Hitokage

Charmander is called Hitokage in Japanese and is written ヒトカゲ. The final character ゲ is ケ with dakuten, changing ke to ge.

Handakuten

A handakuten (半濁点) is a small circle written in the top-right corner of certain kana to change the h sound to a p sound.
